Criminal Background Check

Screen US guests against national and federal databases 

The criminal background check is a screening service hosts can add to their guest journey to screen US-based guests against 2400+ national and federal criminal databases.

How does it work?

  1. The service is offered during the screening step in the program creation flow, where you can choose to add it alongside your other screening services. 
  2. During the guest journey, we will request their address, DOB, and confirmation that they are OK with us running the check. 
    1. If they do not have a US address, the check won't run and you will not be charged. The status will automatically display as "Approved" 
    2. If the guest does not consent to the check, the guest journey will not be completed. The status will remain as "Pending."
  3. Upon receipt of their information, the check will automatically run and a status will be returned to your booking report. 

 

Statuses

Result Definition
Pending  The guest information has not been completed and the check has not yet been run
In Review  Our guest services team needs to investigate and verify the report
Approved The guest has not returned any crimes in the last seven years OR 
The guest did not enter a US address
Flagged The check returned a crime within the last seven years

  1. Is there a list of crimes that return a flagged result? 

    Yes. Here are the categories we screen for:

  2. Can I request further details if a guest is flagged?

    Unfortunately, we can’t share further information about a guest’s flagged status, as criminal records are protected data.

    However, we will not return a flagged status without first double-checking the report and confirming that it is appropriate for the circumstances. 
  3. What databases are checked for this screening? 

    The screening is run through 2400+ national and federal criminal databases in the United States. It does not include state and county databases. 
  4. Will a "Flagged" result affect my protection? 

    The criminal check results will not affect your protection; they are intended to help you learn more about your guest, meet due diligence requirements, and make informed decisions about who you are hosting. 
  5. Can I request a manual check?

     We are required to obtain consent from the guest before running the check. If your booking report says “Pending,” it is likely that the guest did not consent.

    In this scenario, we cannot run the check, but we can let you know that the guest didn’t agree to it and you can decide how to proceed with your booking.
